avenger of blood

In a case of murder, the victim's nearest relative was expected to avenge his death, but the killing was restricted to the perpetrator of the crime (Deut. 24:16) and endless blood feuds were avoided. However, because there could be unintentional homicide, cities of refuge were provided where those who killed accidentally could live without fear (Josh. 20).
